Equipment News: MTV Spring Break Jams

MISSION BAY, CA.  MTV taped their annual Spring Break Jams last March on the sandy beaches of Mission Bay, California.   Production utilized the Lenny Arm II and Hy Hy® base with Hot Head Remote Camera System to achieve some of the overhead and sweeping shots needed during taping.  John Atkinson was the Hot Head Operator and Ray Dettore was the Lenny Arm operator.  The show was taped with a 1" video stock.  The Olympian with the Crane Arm setup was also used for easy mobility over sand.

An Interview with Director of Photography Mark Irwin C.S.C./A.S.C. and Key Grip Chuck Smallwood

by Christine Huenergardt

Salt Lake City, UT.  Mark Irwin noted for his cinematographic work on such notable films as Mighty Duck I & II and Nightmare on Elm Street:  Part 7 is currently working on Katja Motion Pictures production, currently titled Dumb & Dumber. Principal photography has been taking place in Colorado and Utah. Key grip, Chuck Smallwood, is currently working with Mark Irwin on the Dumb & Dumber set.   I recently interviewed Mark Irwin and Chuck Smallwood on some of their opinions on Chapman equipment and service.

Q. What made you choose Chapman equipment?

A. Mark Irwin.  Chapman's design, service and innovation.  I also appreciate their attention to detail and response to field requests and ideas.

Q. What Chapman equipment are you using on your current production and what equipment did you use on your last production?

A. Mark Irwin.  I personally have used only Chapman Equipment since the Hustler was introduced in 1978.  The PeeWee® and Hybrid are the only dollies I use today.

Q. Any particular scene that utilized the equipment in a new or unusual way?

A. Chuck Smallwood.  We often use the Olympian with the Lenny Arm in Configuration #4. We use this setup for shots that require a compound arm move or to reach over large objects.

Q. What type of format do you film with and why?

A. Mark Irwin. I shoot 35 mm AGFA XTS 400 in the 1.85:1 format for theatrical release.

Q. How would you rate Chapman's service and pricing?

A. Chuck Smallwood.  In my 12 years of experience, no other company of motion picture equipment has better customer service than Chapman.  Hector Miranda (one of Chapman's field technicians) has helped me through many difficult situations with ease.  This has helped my productions tremendously.

Q. Is there anything else you would like to add?

A. Chuck Smallwood.  I appreciate working with everyone at Chapman, especially in the design of new equipment and accessories.

Thank you Mark Irwin and Chuck Smallwood. Continued success!
