News from Continental
Film Lab...N. Miami, FL--It was a wild and crazy few days in the middle of February as
more than 204,000 feet of auto racing film came speeding into Continental. The
project rolled in from Dream Quest Images, Inc. of Simi Valley, CA and the Daytona
International Speedway. Dream Quest took on the task of shooting three weekend
races, but not in the typical fashion. They wanted to capture each race from every
possible angle and did it by strategically positioning 18 cameras around the speedway, all
shooting at once using Super 35mm film at 48 FPS. When the weekend was over, Daytona
500 and both sets of the Twin Gatorade 125 were preserved on thousands of feet of
film. It then was the lab's task to transfer Super 35mm at 48 FPS (a job done not in
the conventional style). The work was done using Meta-Speed with keycoding for
cutting on an AVID nonlinear editing system. The film will be blown up to 70mm to create a
12-14 minute spot for Daytona's Visitors Center, which is building a special theatre for
the showing. It is scheduled to open in April of next year.
