Chapman's equipment workshops give Paramount grips hands-on training

Hollywood, CA--Chapman Technical Directors, Steve Miller, Greg Hill, Bradley Baltzell, David Dreben, Hector Miranda, and Jerome Von Holland gave a four-week training class to aspiring grips at Paramount Studios from July 22-Aug.12 under the supervision of General Manager, Chuck Huenergardt. The Saturday workshops were designed to familiarize veteran and rookie grips with Chapman's sophisticated equipment, with an emphasis on efficient use and safety techniques.

"This is the first time we've done this in at least 20 years," said Paramount Grip, Richard Jastrow, who coordinated with Miller to secure the use of  the Leeza Show stage for the training classes.  "It's a win-win situation.   Chapman is happy and we're ecstatic."

The first week covered PeeWee®, Hybrid, and Hustler Dollies and the Pedolly® Pedestal.   Week two featured Sidewinder and Olympian Dollies, the Hy Hy® Base, and Lenny Arms I & II.  Week three familiarized grips with the Nike and Zeus Stage Cranes, ATB and CS Bases, and Lenny Arm III.  Week four introduced the Apollo, Titan, and Super Nova Mobile Cranes.   Each workshop included a question and answer session and concluded with an opportunity for the trainees to gain valuable hands-on experience.

"It's always good knowing how the manufacturer wants you to do something," said Elizabeth Genovese, who attended the workshops despite 10 years of gripping for Sony Pictures.  "Without the benefit of these classes, I wouldn't know how to operate the equipment correctly."

Chapman offers equipment instruction on an appointment basis.  Those interested in hands-on training may contact Steve miller at (818) 764-6726.
